Murrumbidgee Local Health District has appointed two new orthopaedic surgeons for Griffith, both of whom will commence orientation this month.
The surgeons will support the delivery of elective surgery and provide services in the new fracture clinic and appropriate emergency orthopaedic surgery.
While the new Griffith Base Hospital Clinical Services block remains under construction, the surgeons will operate on public patients at the St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital.
Elective orthopaedic surgery for public patients, including joint replacements, has been provided by visiting orthopaedic surgeons since 2020 under a collaborative care arrangement with St Vincent’s.
New operating theatres, designed for orthopaedic surgery, are also under construction as part of the $250 Griffith Base Hospital Development.
NSW Independent MP Helen Dalton, a fierce advocate for the local community when it comes to lobbying for the health services we need, made no bones about how happy she was to hear about two new orthopaedics to join Griffith Base Hospital.
“This would be fantastic news for families in Griffith, Leeton, Hay, Hillston and surrounds,” Mrs Dalton said.
“At our Rural Health Forum last month, Minister Hazzard said the hospital is currently recruiting two orthopaedic surgeons to work at the hospital.
“At a meeting at Griffith Base Hospital on Wednesday, the outgoing General Manager told me those two surgeons would be working at the hospital before the end of the year.
“That's a huge win for our community.”
Mrs Dalton said she had submitted a question on notice to the Health Minister requesting the surgeons’ start date and full details, and would hold the Government to its commitment.
“I want to make sure these surgeons are directly employed by the public hospital,” Mrs Dalton said.
