As this will be my last column prior to the NSW Local Government elections, I would like to take the opportunity to encourage members of the community to consider nominating for Council.
I have been a Councillor for four terms, and while it has been challenging at times, I enjoy having the opportunity to represent my community.
Being on Council is more than just attending meetings - it is participating in the community, providing a voice for those who sometimes wouldn't be able to speak for themselves and it's having the change to help grow this City we all call home.
Being a Councillor does come with its ups and downs, but if you are passionate about Griffith, if you would like to see change and step off the sidelines, this is the perfect time to put your hand up and nominate.
Nominations will open later in the year, please ensure you visit the NSW Electoral Commission website or Facebook page for more information.
Another area I am passionate about is women in Local Government.
The Australian Local Government Women's Association, which I am a member of, aims to encourage women to participate in Local Government. This can be through a career or as a Councillor.
ALGWA is hosting a Candidate Information Session here in Griffith on Saturday May 15 from 9am to 12pm, at Council Chambers.
This information session is specifically targeted at women who may be interested in running for election on Griffith City Council.
Women are underrepresented in Local Government and sessions such as this one, are an important tool for encouraging female participation at a local level.
Presenters will discuss the practicalities around what it’s like to run for election and become elected, in a society where less than a third of local councillors and mayors are women.
I would like to encourage you to consider attending and finding out more about representing your community.
On to Council business, Council is currently calling for submissions in relation to the Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).
Disability Inclusion Planning is one way governments, public authorities and organisations can reduce and remove barriers for people with disability and foster a more accessible and inclusive community. Council is reviewing the current plan and welcomes all feedback, ideas and suggestions about how we can improve services and facilities for those living with a disability.
You can find out more at griffith.nsw.gov.au/onexhibition Another important document under review is the Community Strategic Plan - Guiding Griffith.
This plan guides Council on how best to deliver positive outcomes for our community.
You can help by reviewing the document and providing your thoughts on what is relevant to the community. Have your say by visiting imaginegriffith.com.au
On the site you will find the Plan, helpful resources, short questionnaires and you can meet Walt who aims to help you understand the Community Strategic Plan. Until next time,
