Griffith Celebrates NAIDOC Week
A crowd filled the park yesterday as families acknowledged our First Nations people during NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week is not yet at an end, but already Griffith has celebrated one of Australia’s most significant observances with a range of events, including a celebration at the Griffith Base Hospital, a massive family fun day yesterday and a special storytime at the library today.
The Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service put on one of their best NAIDOC family fun days ever, with everything from carnival and pony rides, jewellery making and craft right through to a reptile show complete with snakes and crocodiles, lizards and turtles.
There were kids having a great time, getting their faces painted and hair sprayed and just enjoying each other’s company.
People were invited to participate in the Passport to Better Health, get a haircut courtesy of Tristan’s Barber Shop, learn more about some of Griffith’s services and listen to some great tunes from a live DJ.
A special NAIDOC Week storytime will take place at Griffith City Library today at 10am.
This Sunday, the Griffith Black & Whites will face off against the DPC Roosters in the Roger Penrith Memorial Cup to round off NAIDOC celebrations.
Maddison Penrith, Roger’s daughter, will present the Welcome to Country and first grade will kick off at 2:30 pm at Solar Mad Stadium.
National NAIDOC Week is celebrated annually in the first week of July, recognising the history, culture and achievements of our First Nations people.
The NAIDOC theme this year is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, celebrating the ways in which First Nations people have a proud history of getting up, standing up, and showing up.
