Griffith Ostomates To Meet At Coro Club
Join the Griffith & District Support Group at the Coro Club on Tuesday, August 6 at 10:30 am for a chat and refreshments.
The Griffith & District Ostomy Support Group will meet at the Coro Club on Tuesday, August 6 at 10:30 am.
This gathering is an opportunity for ostomates to get together and chat with people experiencing the same thing.
It is also a chance to meet the local Stomas Therapy Nurses.
Stomas Therapy Nurse, Beth Gill said the group had been around for a number of years but had been restored in March of this year after a COVID-related hiatus.
“An ostomy is also known as a stoma - a patient undergoes surgery to have part of their bowel brought to their skin and then covered with a bag,” Beth said.
“There are many reasons why this surgery might be performed, but some of the most common ones are due to bowel or colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis of chron’s disease.”
Beth said that nearly 50,000 Australians had a stoma.
“There are ostomates (people who have a stoma) everywhere and our support group welcomes them and their carer or support person from Griffith District and surrounding areas,” she said.
“Our group meets up every two months to catch up, socialise and share ideas over refreshments.
“Our meetings are also attended by MLHD Stomal Therapy Clinical Nurse Consultants and our local Community Stomal Therapy Nurse (me) for ostomates to ask questions and access practical support.
There is no need to register your attendance, just drop in and enjoy the socialisation and some light refreshments on the day.
