A passion to support local families has inspired Southern Cross Australia Griffith’s Sales Manager Jason Austin to hit the road.
Jason’s riding to regional NSW cities and towns, covering nearly 1,200km on an eight-day tour to raise awareness for mental health and raise money for men’s health charity Beyond Blue.
“We came up with the idea for RIDE4U – to recognise those lives that have been lost and support those who battle mental health and their families,” Jason said.
He says to asking for support himself, adding he was better off for it. “Time to Survive reflects on the need for mental health awareness and I am hoping to highlight the fact that to survive my journey I’ve had to ask for help and support. Some days are going to be harder than others. So whatever your journey in life is never be afraid to ask for help, especially when things get tough.”
On his journey, Jason travels from Griffith to Wagga on Wednesday April 21, Wagga to Young on Thursday April 22, Young to Orange on Friday, Orange to Mudgee on Saturday and resting to observe Anzac Day in Mudgee on April 25. He travels to Muswellbrook from Mudgee on Monday April 26, then onto Newcastle and ending at the Central Coast on Wednesday April 28.
Many regional areas, over the past 12 months have experienced a significant increase in the rate of suicide. Beyond Blue has had a 42% increase in calls to the support service during the pandemic (March to December 2020), compared to the same time in 2019.
Mr Austin is no stranger to supporting Southern Cross Austereo charities through bike rides. He has been supporting Beyond Blue and Give Me 5 for Kids with bike rides for many years.
“This has really been something I’ve al-ways wanted to do and with the wonderful support of many I’m able to take this on and not have any regrets, so here we go,” said Mr Austin.
