Congratulations and good luck go out to Griffith Clinical Nurse Educator, Sherin George who was named a finalist in the annual Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) Excellence Awards.

The winners will be announced at a special gala event in Wagga tomorrow night with around 150 staff and guests in attendance.

Griffith Base Hospital boasts three finalists in the annual Awards this year.

Sherin George was nominated for the Nurse or Midwife of the Year Award along with Elyse Wilson (RN).

The hospital’s Patient Experience Officer, Sarah Grant was nominated for the Collaborative Staff Member of the Year Award.

Sherin George said it was a proud moment when he learned he was a finalist.

“I thank our area health, my colleagues and my ED team for nominating me,” Mr George said.

“I am extremely honoured to be recognised as a finalist.

“I am sincerely grateful for the recognition.

“I work with a very hard-working team in our emergency department at Griffith Base and I believe that whatever I have achieved is through our team effort.

“I am very committed to our area health, since I moved here as an overseas visitor employee 11 years ago, MLHD helped me to broaden my skills, knowledge and hence my career through great managers and educators.”

Mr George considers himself a public servant and said he practises introspection to consider whether there was something more or different he could have done in any situation.

“I always want to deliver 100 per cent to the system, whether it is nursing my clients or teaching my colleagues,” he said.

“My managers have supported and trusted me in my potential when I was given each task from ED team leader to clinical specialist to clinical educator and it is a chance to pay them back by bringing home such a great achievement.

“I believe if I win it is a recognition of my honesty, dedication to my career, hard work and dedication to our health system and our community.”

Mr George said the MLHD Awards recognised the hard work that healthcare workers had done during the pandemic and that meant a lot.

“The whole health system was struggling in the last two to three years with staff sickness, patient numbers sky rocketing and issues with health workers leaving medical professions,” Mr George said.

“The health system has a lot of challenges, but appreciating those hard-working staff and teams will increase the sense of group cohesiveness, and staff morale, and increase dedication and productivity.”

More than 70 nominations were received across 12 award categories this year.

MLHD Acting Chief Executive, Carla Bailey said it was the first time they had been able to celebrate face-to-face since before COVID.

“Our finalists and their guests are all very excited to be able to come together to celebrate their successes with this wonderful occasion,” Ms Bailey said.

“Many of the nominations reflected on how our staff had adapted and innovated throughout the pandemic to provide continuity of service and also improve the experience of our patients.

“It’s so rewarding to see how our teams have been able to evolve and overcome these obstacles and, importantly, how they recognise the importance of putting the patient at the centre of their care in every aspect of their work.”

The winner of the Excellence and Leadership in Research Award, sponsored by the Agency for Clinic Innovation, and the Volunteer of the Year Award will also be announced tomorrow night.

The evening will culminate in the presentation of the Chief Executive Choice Award and the Board Chair’s Choice Award.
