Griffith Regional Art Gallery’s community art exhibition for 2024 opens tonight, Friday, September 27 at 6 pm.

The Griffith Regional Art Gallery’s community art exhibition for 2024, The Fruits of Labour: Celebrating 100 Years of Irrigation Research and the CSIRO opens tonight, Friday, September 27 at 6 pm.

Featuring historical information and memorabilia as well as artworks by local artists, this exhibition has been curated by Gallery coordinator, Raymond Wholohan and Dr Barrie Steer, former Research Scientist for the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation).

It aims to honour the legacy of irrigation research and the CSIRO in Griffith over the past century.

Mr Wholohan said this exhibition contained a broad range of contemporary artwork created by local artists, based around the theme.

“We also have historical information, objects and cultural material from the CSIRO and other associated organisations such as IREC (Irrigation Research Extension Committee) and loans from Pioneer Park Museum and other private collections,” Mr Wholohan said.

“Many local artists have also created a visual feast of clever interpretations of the theme Fruits of Labour.”

Dr Steer, who worked with the CSIRO for many years and has been instrumental in developing this exhibition said they invited anyone who worked or had an affiliation with the CSIRO, or had an interest in scientific research in this district to the opening tonight.

“Not only will it be a great opportunity to catch up with old colleagues, but also celebrate the legacy of an important part of Griffith’s history,” Dr Steer said.

Artists, patrons of the Gallery and the wider community are invited to the opening of this important exhibition tonight at 6 pm.

Contact Griffith Regional Art Gallery at gallery@griffith.nsw.gov.au or via 6962 3883 for more information about the exhibition.

The gallery is open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm Wednesday to Friday and 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
