Concerned about the COVID-19 vaccination rate, Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) is encouraging more residents to get informed and book an appointment.

Numbers remain low despite people aged 40 to 49 now eligible for the Pfizer vaccination. MLHD COVID-19 coordinator, Emma Field said the Griffith vaccination hub is well prepared for residents to book in.

“We’re seeing smaller numbers in Griffith than other locations,” Ms Field said. “We’re encouraging those in groups 1a to 1b and others to come along. We welcome anyone in these groups to take the opportunity to get vaccinated.”

The Pfizer vaccination has been available in Griffith for at least six weeks. AstraZeneca has been available since April.

“Grififth has a public facing clinic for those aged 40 to 49. Those over 50 can also book into that clinic,” she said.

Those in this younger age bracket have been able to receive their first Pfizer jab for about two weeks.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 to 40, NDIS participants aged from 16 and carers as well as certain temporary visa holders under 50 are all eligible.

Ms Field was not aware of any vaccination waiting lists, leaving little reason on the organisational side for the low numbers.

Vaccination is also available at Darlington Point Medical Centre, Griffith Medical Centre, Murrumbidgee Medical and Primary Care Centre in Leeton, Leeton Medical Centre, Kookora Surgery and Leeton Medical Practice.

Around 7,500 vaccinations have been administered across the MLHD, with Ms Field commenting that 1,700 were given last week.

“We respect that people can exercise their right to refuse [the vaccine]. We encourage people in the 1a and 1b groups to consider it. However, we do respect anyone’s wishes,” she said.

Residents are urged to check their eligibility on the NSW Health website. Murrumbidgee Public Health Network Acting CEO, Julie Redway said the area’s GPs are prepared. Appointments can be made online, through the hub or contacting a practice.

“All of the participating Murrumbidgee region GPs, medical services and vaccination hubs are working tirelessly to provide this important vaccine to their communities and keep everyone safe,” Ms Redway said.
